ESSE Grad Student Wendel Chan Wins Esri Canada GIS Scholarship

ESSE graduate student Wendel Chan has been awarded the 2015 Esri Canada GIS Scholarship. Awarded to only one York student per year, the scholarship consists of a financial reward, a comprehensive package of Esri software, educational workbooks, and access to Esri’s Virtual Campus.

“I feel very honoured to be winning this award. This win speaks to our school’s great reputation and specifically the reputation of our Geomatics Engineering program,” says Chan.

His research examines 3D evacuation routes in buildings under changing hazard conditions to determine the safest path in an emergency situation.

For Chan’s research supervisor Prof. Costas Armenakis, the win came as little surprise:

“I am delighted for my student’s award and for this well-deserved recognition of Wendel’s research work, where he applies a systematic, well thought and well-documented research process followed by thorough testing, implementation, model calibration and validation,” says Prof. Armenakis.

Chan is currently completing his Master’s in Earth and Space Science and did his undergraduate in Geomatics Engineering also at Lassonde.

Esri scholarships are available to academic institutions across Canada with strong geographic information system programs. Esri technology is used by Canadian educational institutions to develop students’ geographic literacy, spatial awareness, critical thinking and analytical skills.
