Lassonde unveils new $1.5-million technology partnership with iFLYTEK

The Lassonde School of Engineering has announced a new $1.5-million partnership with international technology firm iFLYTEK.

Based in Anhui Province, China, iFLYTEK is a software enterprise dedicated to the research of intelligent speech and language technologies, development of software and chip products, provision of speech information services, and integration of e-government systems. 

“Breakthroughs in technology are achieved by passionate people working collaboratively with those who can offer different perspectives to solve the most complex challenges,” said Janusz Kozinski, Founding Dean of the Lassonde School of Engineering.

“This remarkable gift from iFLYTEK will provide the resources we need to put Lassonde researchers at the vanguard of new advances in this rapidly-emerging field,” he added.

The $1.5-million donation will support research led by Professor Hui Jiang from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Lassonde School of Engineering.

This funding will create the iFLYTEK Laboratory for Neural Computing and Machine Learning (iNCML) together with a new Professorship to lead research in this field at Lassonde.

“iFLYTEK is one of China’s most innovative companies with an exceptional record in research and development,” said Professor Jiang.

“The newly-established iFLYTEK Laboratory for Neural Computing and Machine Learning will bring together the world’s top minds in an outstanding facility focused on this vital area of research,” he added.

The partnership was officially announced today at a ceremony in the Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence, the home of the Lassonde School of Engineering, followed by the formal opening of the iFLYTEK Laboratory.

Speaking at today’s announcement, Founding Dean Janusz Kozinski said:

Together, the combined efforts of iFLYTEK and Lassonde will establish a new research powerhouse artificial neural networks with enormous potential to generate new and unexpected discoveries.”
