York University Memo: Campus Security and Safety

Posted on

April 17, 2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, York University moved to a Required Services Model, where, only those essential personnel necessary to maintain campus operations and a small number of residents are permitted to remain on campus. To comply with government directives and to ensure the continued safety of the York community, buildings are locked and only those who receive authorization are allowed access.

We recognize and appreciate the great support of York community members regarding these necessary measures. However, the Community Safety Department has been responding to a few reports of building doors being found either propped open, or damaged. In response, York’s security staff are implementing an enhanced crime prevention strategy, including active building and door patrols, tracking of incidents and reviewing pertinent CCTV footage. They are also working with social service agencies to help support any homeless individuals on our campuses as well as coordinating with Facilities Services to repair any found damage.

Security and facilities staff are requesting your assistance to help maintain campus safety by strictly following building security measures and reporting any incidents, when authorized to be on campus. In addition, we kindly remind everyone to follow physical distancing and public health directives. If you observe any open doors or damage to buildings, or any other suspicious activity, please report it immediately to Security Services at 416-650-8000. By working together, we can ensure the continued safety and security of our campuses, and compliance with government directives.

For more information about authorized access to buildings on campus please see the Building Closure Memo. For other information related to health and safety, please visit the University’s COVID-19 website.
