The Graduate Program in Earth and Space Science (ESS) is a multidisciplinary research program associated with the\u00a0Department of Earth and Space Science & Engineering (ESSE)<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Centre for Research in Earth and Space Science (CRESS)<\/a>. The graduate program provides postgraduate instruction and research experience for graduate students working towards either\u00a0MSc<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0PhD<\/a>\u00a0degrees. Research is carried out under the supervision of\u00a0ESS faculty members<\/a>, who are drawn from a number of science departments within York University or Adjunct Faculty Members appointed to the Graduate Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A complete application package must be received by the Graduate Admissions Office at York University by the deadline date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MSc (Degree by Thesis) and PhD (Degree by Dissertation) programs require a student supervisor. Applicants are encouraged (but not required) to contact potential supervisors before or during their application process. Please see our list of\u00a0faculty<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applications are then considered by the Graduate Program Assessment Committee. Approved applicants are then shared with ESS faculty members for review. If a faculty member agrees to supervise an applicant, that applicant will be admitted to the ESS program and a decision letter will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In cases where no supervisor can be found, the applications are refused in late March or early April (FALL intake), late July or early August (WINTER intake) and late November or early December (SUMMER intake).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of applicants exceeds the number of positions available. Meeting minimum admissions requirements is not a guarantee of admission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MSc Degree by Coursework program does not require a supervisor, but it is an unfunded degree. Candidates are assessed by the Graduate Program Assessment Committee and acceptance is dependent on the availability of suitable ESS graduate courses.Visit Admissions website for more information<\/p>\n\n\n\n

English Language Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When an applicant’s first language is other than English, consideration for admission includes establishing an acceptable level of language proficiency by completing a language proficiency test. (Graduate Studies does not require language tests from applicants who have completed two years or more at an accredited university in a country (or institution) where English is the official language of instruction.)
