Discovery Grants Program
Value: $20,000 to $1 million per year
Duration: 1 to 5 years
Deadline: Intent to Apply, August 1, 2020 | Full Application, November 1, 2020

The Discovery Grants Program supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances. Discovery Grants are considered “grants in aid” of research, as they provide long term operating funds and can facilitate access to funding from other programs, but are not meant to support the full costs of a research program.

The 2021 Discovery Grants competition will be for new applicants (those not currently holding a Discovery Grant or a Discovery Grant – Subatomic Physics) and those who choose not to accept the extension. Researchers will also be able to apply for Northern Research Supplements, Research Tools and Instruments and Ship Time, as usual. The Research Portal is expected to be open for applicants to submit their Notice of Intent (NOI) at the beginning of May 2020. Should delays be experienced, they will be communicated as soon as possible.

Information about – NSERC grant extensions

NSERC has updated their FAQ’s and you can visit the website for additional information.

  • NSERC is allowing an additional year extension for those grants that end between Feb 1, 2020 through to March 31, 2021. This allows PI’s to continue to use unspent funds.  PI’s can request this extension by sending an email to resacct@yorku.ca
  • A second extension offers active NSERC DG grant holders an extension with additional funds for those PI’s’ that are eligible.  NSERC will contact PI’s directly regarding this.

Once we receive notices from NSERC we will proceed to deposit additional funds to those eligible NSERC DG grant holders as per Tri agency.

A note from NSERC: The 2021 Discovery competition will continue as planned. To support our researchers and the people they support with their grants throughout the COVID-19 crisis, returning grantees due to apply this year for competition 2021 will receive the Discovery Grants one-year extension with funds due to COVID-19 at their present funding level. This one year extension will be granted for the following programs: Discovery Grants, Discovery Grants – Subatomic Physics (Individual, Project and Major Resources Support), Discovery Grants – Northern Research Supplements and Discovery Development Grants.
