TE uses an industry-academic collaboration model.
For internships (TIP), OCE contributes $10000 per 4-month period (a unit), while industry contributes $5000 in cash and $5000 in-kind. OCE pays for the student; industry pays for operating costs. A maximum of 3 units is allowed per candidate for latter-year undergrad and master’s; a maximum of 6 units is allowed for PhD students.
For fellowships (TFP), OCE contributes $35000 per year (a unit), while industry contributes $25000 in cash and $25000 in-kind. Minimum salary for the fellow is $52500; remainder can pay for operating costs. A maximum of 2 units is allowed.
The application form is simple and straightforward; one can apply any time; typical turn-around is 6 weeks; candidates must already be selected. Industry partners of any size must be doing R&D in Ontario
