On June 22, 2026, MOVE, SmartTO and YSpace hosted “AI for Urban Mobility: Connecting Data, Research & Industry”, a half-day event at the Lassonde School of Engineering that brought together researchers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, community organizations and public-sector partners to explore the role of artificial intelligence in urban mobility, analytics and smart-city innovation.
The well-attended event showcased emerging research, fostered new collaborations, and created opportunities for knowledge exchange between academia, industry and government.
The program featured a keynote address by Professor Mehdi Nourinejad (MOVE faculty member), research showcases from several MOVE faculty members (Professors James Elder, Hina Tabassum, Shweta Mahajan, Hany Farag & Manos Papagelis), and a multidisciplinary panel discussion on the future of AI in urban analytics. Panelists represented leaders from Esri Canada, the Ontario Centre of Innovation, City of Toronto, and York Region. Professor Gunho Sohn, Director of MOVE, was also a panelist.
The event highlighted Lassonde’s leadership in advancing AI-enabled transportation research while strengthening partnerships across academia, industry, community organizations and government. Through discussions on data-driven mobility, urban analytics and smart-city innovation, participants identified new opportunities for collaboration that will help shape the future of transportation in Ontario and beyond.
