Key research areas: Development of hydrometallurgical, chemical or biological processes for the decontamination and recovery of matrices contaminated by metals, rare earths and/or toxic organic compounds (e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins and furans), such as polluted soils, treated wood waste, waste batteries, electronic waste, mine tailings and various types of industrial wastes.

Professor Jean-François Blais has a B.SC. degree in Biochemistry (in 1988) and a M.Sc. degree in Microbiology (in 1989) from Laval University (Québec, Canada) and a Ph.D. degree in Water Sciences (in 1992) from National Institute for Scientific Research (Québec University, Québec, Canada). After an experience of Post-doctoral researcher, at the Cominco Research Center (Trail, British Colombia), he got an assistant professor position at the Water Center of the National Institute for Scientific Research in 1998. Since 2004, he is full professor at the Water, Earth and Environment Center of the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS-ETE) and he was also holder of the Canada Research Chair in environmental decontamination for the period 2001 to 2011. He was also Director of the INRS-ETE March 2014 to March 2019. He is co-author of more than 275 research papers, 280 conference presentations, and 105 scientific reports. He is co-inventor of 18 patents related to new environmental technologies. Until now, he has supervised and co-supervised the research projects of more than 54 M.Sc. and 61 Ph.D. students. Finally, he was also Editor of the Journal of Water Science (Revue des Sciences de l’Eau) and associate editor of different scientific journals.
