YU’s Covid-19 Updates & Resources

CEWIL: Tips on Working From Home

⠀Given the pandemic, are co-op/internship employers still hiring?
We acknowledge that employers may face grave financial consequences as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and may reduce student hiring.  The Federal government has made available various wage subsidy programs, such as the Student Work Placement Program, for employers to hire students.  It is our hope that employers will utilize the funding and students will remain connected to the labour market.

What types of positions can I expect to find?
Many organizations are offering remote work to help slow the transmission of COVID-19. It is possible that positions available will continue to be remote, we support these decisions and are available to provide students and employers with resources so that you can have a successful work term.
Some organizations will require students to physically be present during their work hours or a combination of work from home and at-work site. For these positions, our students’ health and safety is paramount and we strongly encourage you to have conversations with the employer about the health and safety measures in place for their employees. Employers are likely to discuss these health and safety measures during the interview stage or during the on-boarding process.

Are there changes to the criteria of an internship/co-op position?
In addition to remote positions being approved for eligible co-op and internship positions, we will work with students and employer to help find options to complete a successful work term, which may include a reduction in the number of weeks/hours required towards a work term.
Also, there is increased flexibility in considering a greater variety of jobs that students may deem relevant to their professional development.  Some examples may include special projects and entrepreneurial positions.

I am in the program, but about to exceed the minimum number of credits prior to securing my first work term. Will exceptions be made due to the pandemic?
Exception requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and for extenuating circumstances.  If you believe you plans for your first work term were impacted due to the pandemic, please contact our team at lsecoop@lassonde.yorku.ca to schedule an appointment to discuss your situation.

I am an international student, will I still be able to secure a co-op work permit?
According to the IRCC’s website, there are delays with processing times for co-op work permits. Students who are applying for entry into the program are encouraged to complete the co-op registration process as early as possible. Upon successful admission into the program, you will be provided a supporting letter from the institution to help you secure a co-op work permit.
Please note that the Workplace Learning Coordinators (Co-op Coordinators) are not “authorized representatives” in accordance with the section 91 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, (June 2011) and are therefore unable to advise students on immigration options, help them complete or submit immigration forms, or communicate with CIC on their behalf.  For any immigration matters, please connect with an Immigration Specialist at York International. Visit their website at: https://yorkinternational.yorku.ca/international-student-advising/.

I am currently working remotely and my company is asking us to return to work. I have some concerns.
Please update your COVID-19 Work Status form on the Co-op Portal and contact a co-op coordinator immediately. Email us at lsecoop@lassonde.yorku.ca. Your health and safety is paramount and we will work with each student to identify a plan that is of mutual benefit to you and the employer.
⠀I am an international student and cannot travel to Canada at the moment. What are my options?⠀
As per the IRCC’s website, below is the temporary provision during COVID-19 with regards to co-op positions.
”During the COVID-19 outbreak, many international students are studying online from abroad. If your school and employer agree, you can either
⠀⠀⠀● accept a Canadian work placement and begin working remotely from your home country
⠀⠀⠀● work for a company in your home country
If you’re working remotely from outside Canada, you can work while we process your study permit and co-op work permit applications.”
Please contact a Co-op Coordinator at lsecoop@lassonde.yorku.ca for the next steps in ensuring the co-op is registered.

Can I apply to international positions?
The safety of students is important to us, and as such, we aim to align with the Government of Canada’s and York University’s guidelines for all non-remote international co-ops and internships.
The University continues to strongly recommend that faculty and contract faculty, staff and students avoid all non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice. This includes pursuing co-ops/internships outside of Canada.
Fall 2021, Winter 2022 and Summer 2022 positions: As policies and laws regarding entry of non-citizens in different countries across the globe vary, along with the ever-changing guidelines on travel from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), we are encouraging all students to prioritize their co-op & internship search for Canadian businesses and organizations that have an entity in Canada to help minimize the potential of having a job offer rescinded.
Please contact us at lsecoop@lassonde.yorku.ca for additional inquiries regarding this matter.

⠀How can I search for co-op/internships during the pandemic?⠀
Our team is working with industry partners to ensure awareness of our students’s availability for co-op and internship terms.
Students are encouraged to continue to seek internships and co-op opportunities within Canada. Positions will continue to be posted on the  Co-op portal daily. As always, students are encouraged to utilize other methods of job searching beyond the Co-op portal.
Workplace Learning Coordinators are available to provide individualized support for your job search. This service will be provided virtually (telephone, email or Zoom meeting). Please attend our drop-in hours.

⠀How will interviews be conducted?⠀
Co-op Coordinators will continue to coordinate interviews. Students are expected to accept interviews they are interested in pursuing. We are advising that you ask employers for telephone or video interviews when requests are coming directly from employers. We will recommend employers utilize virtual methods to conduct interviews in lieu of in-person interviews.

⠀How will job offers be handled?/I have secured a job offer, what next?⠀
Co-op Coordinators will continue to coordinate job offers. Please monitor your telephone and email for us to be able to reach you and provide the employers a timely decision. Students are encouraged to speak to Co-op Coordinators about any questions about their job offers, including decisions.

⠀I’m having a hard time securing a co-op/internship. What can I do?⠀
We recognize that the pandemic has created additional challenges for students searching for a co-op/internship. As every student is different, please connect with a Workplace Learning Coordinator for to discuss your specific situation. Attend our drop-in hours or email lsecoop@lassonde.yorku.ca.
