It is important to know if you are on-track to completing your academic milestones. This section provides checkpoints. You are advised to meet with your supervisor and supervisory committee to ensure timely completion.
MSc – Course and Research Exercise
Complete six courses (3-credit courses) and conduct an exercise in research procedures and report on it in an appropriate manner. The section of graduate courses and of the topic of the research exercise must be arranged in consultation with the Graduate Program Director
MSc – Thesis

PhD – Dissertation
Coursework
All PhD candidates must complete at least two REC courses. If a student started as an MSc and switched to PhD, they can use one ESS 6030 course. Or it can be two ESS 7030 courses.
If a PhD candidate has an MSc from a recognized university, and any MSc degree that is relevant to their PhD students, and they have at least three relevant courses from that degree, they are required to take 1 non-REC course for their PhD.
If a PhD candidate does not have an MSc from a recognized university with at least 3 equivalent courses from that degree, they must take 4 non-REC courses.
Within term 1 & 2, complete the Supervisor & Supervisory Committee Approval Form. The completed form will be entered into the FGS portal and your supervisory committee will need to approve online.
Graduate Research Evaluation Course – ESS 7030 A-F (Summer term)
Participation is required for all full-time MSc students.
~ Exceptions: thesis defense has been scheduled before July 1 of the calendar year, or students commenced their program in January of the same calendar year.
~ Part-time students should complete the REC evaluation presentation report, committee meeting and form with their supervisor committee, in camera, if possible.

Note: The questions in research ethic portal replaces the TD1 form (no human participants, no animals, no biohazards and no secondary data analysis). Should your research involve any of the previously mentioned, please refer to the Faculty of Graduate Studies website to complete other forms.

No less than two months before your defense, your supervisory committee must read the thesis and agree that the version read is ready to proceed to defense.
Complete the Recommendation for Oral Exam paperwork.
Examining committee: a) Chair (must be arm’s length from the dissertation), b) External Examiner, from outside York University, arm’s length from the dissertation, c) one graduate faculty member at arm’s length from the dissertation, and normally from outside the program, d) two graduate faculty members from the supervisory committee, or one member from the supervisory committee and one graduate faculty member from the program .
NOTE: Your examination date should be no less than 30 business days from the time you submit this online form. Th ESS graduate program requires 2-3 business days to input this information into the FGS Recommendation for Oral Examination Portal. There will be 5 business days allotted for your supervisory committee to approve that the dissertation is ready to is ready to defend. From there, FGS requires 20 business days to process the paperwork. If you can send the paperwork earlier, this will alleviate any stress on all parties.
