The graduate program in the Department of Civil Engineering fosters research in infrastructure, resilience, and sustainability through the established sub-disciplines of Structures, Geotechnical Engineering, Geo-Environmental and Environmental Engineering, Water Resources, and Transportation.
Cutting edge research is being carried out in our state-of-the-art facilities, which are located in the new Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence. The facilities include a 350m2 Structures Laboratory that houses a 6 m-high L-shaped reaction wall. In addition, our facilities include over 400m2 of dedicated laboratory space to conduct research in Transportation and Construction Materials, Geotechnical and Geo-Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Our graduate students also have access to a Computational Modelling Lab.

MASC Degree Requirements
I) In addition to ENG 6000, MASc students are required to complete five one-term courses. These must include at least three core courses within their sub-discipline, one technical elective and one open elective. Students must also register in CIVL 6000 and CIVL 9002 every term until all degree requirements have been successfully completed. A maximum of two directed reading courses may be counted toward the degree.
II) Each student must attend a minimum of ten graduate seminars and give at least one graduate seminar based on the student’s research project.
III) Students must submit a copy of their proposal for approval by their supervisory committee, graduate program director within the first 12 months of their program.
IV) Each MASc student must submit a thesis on their research project in written form and defend the thesis in an oral examination to a thesis examination committee.

The requirements for the MASc degree also include non-credit complementary activities.
Graduate Seminar Series in Civil Engineering
GS/CIVL 6000
Students are required to register in the Graduate Seminar Series course for every term during their study period. Each student must attend a minimum of ten graduate seminars and give at least one graduate seminar based on the student’s research project.
Engineering Ethics
GS/ENG 6000
All students are also required to take a non-credit course on engineering ethics offered by the Lassonde School of Engineering
MASc Thesis in Civil Engineering
GS/CIVL 6002
Students are required to register in the Master’s thesis course for every term during their study period.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

1 Technical Elective
Technical electives can be selected from courses in Civil Engineering that are outside of the subdiscipline. They can also be from courses offered by other graduate programs within the Lassonde School of Engineering or from courses offered by the Graduate Program in Environmental Studies or by the Graduate Program in Geography.
1 Open elective
An open elective can either be another technical elective or can be selected from courses offered by other York University Faculties.
