Hands-On Entrepreneurial Experience: Summer 2024 BEST Program
The Bergeron Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (BEST) program concluded another term of entrepreneurial Work-Integrated Learning (e-WIL) in summer 2024, offering students invaluable insights into the world of startups. Launched at York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering in Fall 2022, BEST e-WIL program provides students hands-on entrepreneurial experiences, allowing them to work alongside a BEST startup while developing both practical and professional skills as they learn to build and grow a business. Some of the impacts on student learning are captured from their reflections, below.
Fast-Paced Experiential Learning
“The most beneficial aspects of my placement were the fast pace and experimental learning,” says Adrien Kaminski. “It allowed me to adapt and learn new things quickly.”
For Laxit Shahi, the environment of collaboration and open conversation was key. “I was surrounded by a diverse group of mentors, advisors, and peers. Everyone’s goals were different but also similar. This created a cohesive experience that helped me learn and grow like no other during my academic career.”
Developing Core Skills
Participants also refined technical skills throughout the summer. Prabhkirat Kaur Arora shared how the program helped her grow as a tech professional: “I honed my web design skills, deepened my knowledge in frontend development, and worked on problem-solving and project management. These skills have been essential in advancing my ability to contribute to tech projects.”
Ethan Fifle, who took on a leadership role, gained a deeper understanding of what drives a startup forward. “I learned that while technical skills are fundamental, the ability to lead a team, manage time effectively, and adapt quickly is what truly drives success. This program taught me the importance of collaboration and leadership.”
Complexities of Business
The e-WIL experience also exposed students to the inner workings of businesses. “I realized there are so many nuances within a business,” says Jiya Khurana. “There’s always a roadblock to overcome, and every action impacts the business itself.”
Victor Chung emphasized the importance of adaptability and time management. “Balancing technical expertise with business acumen is crucial in turning an idea into a viable product. The experience pushed me to grow beyond my comfort zone, improving not only my technical skills but also my understanding of business strategy, teamwork, and self-management.”
The journeys these students experienced serve as a testament to the value of programs like e-WIL, equipping them with the skills and confidence to navigate the entrepreneurial world.
