September kicked off the academic year at Lassonde with more than 700 first-year students at Academic Orientation, a week of WeekZer0 programming led by over 120 student leaders, and the arrival of three new faculty members. We also welcomed Governor General Louise Arbour, who explored AI-powered healthy aging technologies, and Ontario Minister Nolan Quinn visited Professor Roger Kempers’ lab. Other highlights included a breakthrough year of Mars research led by graduate students, and record-setting results for the Arbalest Rocketry team at the Launch Canada Challenge.

This August, 100 high school students joined k2i academy working on AI, sustainability, energy, and space technology projects. Researchers received $3M in Connected Minds funding for AI-powered health technologies, including wearable epilepsy monitoring and social robots supporting older adults, while a sweat-based biosensor project secured over $5M to advance preventive medicine. This month, the Arbalest Rocketry team placed second at the Launch Canada Challenge, 70 undergraduates presented at the Lassonde Undergraduate Summer Research Conference, and the first-ever Pre-WeekZer0 Tune-Up welcomed incoming students ahead of the fall semester.

Other highlights included AI tools advancing cancer care, mining waste turned into 3D-printed concrete, and a smart knee brace combining engineering and health care and the 2026 D2L Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning for Lassonde’s First-Year Engineering Block Model.
