The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer is a ceremony administered by the Corporation of the Seven Wardens Inc., an independent body responsible for administering and maintaining the Iron Ring ceremony. The seven past presidents of the Engineering Institute of Canada in 1922 were the original seven wardens. Engineering students who have been obligated at the authorized ceremony wear an iron ring on the little finger of the working hand. The ring symbolizes the engineers’ pride in their profession, while simultaneously reminding them of their humility. The ring reminds the engineer and others of the engineer’s obligation to live by a high standard of professional conduct.

Engineering students must attend the Iron Ring ceremony in order to receive the Iron Ring.

Ensure you meet the graduation requirements. You must be eligible to graduate from a Bachelor of Engineering program in Spring 2024. If you have graduated prior to Spring 2024 and wish to participate in an Iron Ring ceremony you are still able to participate.

STEP TWO (February 2nd, 2024 – February 20th, 2024)

Find out what your ring size is (on your pinky finger on your working hand. For example, if you are right-handed, you would size your right-hand pinky). Feel free to visit the Student Welcome and Support Centre front desk in the Bergeron Centre lobby or any local jeweller to get your size. Remember, never measure ring size while your hand is cold – let your hands adjust to room temperature when coming in from the outdoors.

STEP THREE (February 12th, 2024 – February 20th, 2024)

Complete the MANDATORY Camp 1 Orientation Quiz (https://camp1.ecrew.ca/). You will be asked to set up an account and successfully complete the orientation quiz. You MUST successfully pass to participate in the Obligation Ceremony (Iron Ring Ceremony). Ensure that you keep the email confirming you have successfully completed the quiz.

STEP FOUR (February 21st, 2024 – February 27th, 2024)

Go to the Camp 1 website (https://students.camp1.ca/york) and register for the Iron Ring Obligation Ceremony. You MUST complete your registration by the deadline of February 27th, 2024 in order to participate.

Please note that you will be required to register on the Camp 1 page to attend the ceremony despite having registered yourself for the mandatory Camp 1 Orientation Quiz previously.

When completing the Camp 1 Iron Ring Registration form:

  • ALWAYS use the same email address and name (please check your email carefully).
  • Know your ring size.
  • Include the mailing address for where you will be living for the next 4 months. Graduated students should use a valid email.
