The Lassonde Machine Shop specializes in general and precision metal fabrication to support Undergraduate, Graduate and Research projects. Providing real world manufacturing exposure with a hands-on approach.

Requirements for Access

  • Participate in training as required.
  • Book out machines using Q-Reserve booking software.
  • Only using machines trained to operate.
  • Check PPE for damage prior to use.

Training

The Lassonde Machine shop is now operating all bookings and trainings via the QReserve platform. This is to provide a more streamlined and transparent experience to our users.

This page is intended to provide the steps needed to register for the QReserve site and then complete the necessary online and in person trainings through the platform.

Completion of the online and in person trainings will provide you access to reserve the machines and resources at the Lassonde Machine Shop, with the Machine Shop staff’s approval.

IMPORTANT: You must first complete the WHMIS 2 Training before taking any of the machine shop trainings.

1. Follow this guide to create your QReserve account. Please use your @yorku.ca or @my.yorku.ca email to create the account.

2. Read the following materials before utilizing the Machine shop and Q Reserve;
    a. Machine Shop Manual
    b. Machine Shop Safety Guide

3. After joining the Lassonde site, you will see 3 buttons. Click the “Step 1- Complete Machine Shop Knowledge Check Quiz” button.

You must click this button and complete the quiz before the Mill and Lathe trainings will become available.

4. You will be prompted to start the quiz, you can also click off the quiz to view the same materials listed above in this Machine Shop Knowledge Check page.

5. When you are ready click the “Step 1-Complete Now” button to start the quiz.

6. If the following request menu appears click the “Next” button

7. Enter the answers to the questions, then at the bottom of the page click the “Step 1 Complete” button.

8. Once you submit the quiz, please wait to receive an email indicating you have passed the quiz and granted the Machine Shop Knowledge Check Credential.
    a. If you have not passed the quiz you will receive an email indicating which questions are incorrect, you can resubmit a new quiz attempt.

9. Back on the QReserve site page you will see the buttons for “Complete Basic Training Lathe” and “Complete Basic Training Mill”.

10. Click either of the buttons and use the date calendars to book Lathe and Mill trainings.

11. Completing both trainings will provide you with the credentials needed to book the Manual Mills and Manual Lathes at the Machine Shop.

12. After you have been marked as complete for both in person trainings by the Machine Shop staff, you will be able to book the mills and lathes.

Equipment Reservations

  • Booking of equipment is done through Q Reserve, machines and equipment can be booked up to 2 weeks in advance. Please check the schedule to ensure the shop is available for the time you are requesting equipment booking.

Safety Reminder

  • Safety shoes and safety glasses need to be worn upon entering the Lassonde Machine Shop, 035.
  • Long hair needs to be tied back/up.  No jewellery or loose articles of clothing are to be worn in the shop.
  • Report all health and safety incidents immediately to the Machine Shop Staff.

Job Submission Requirements

  • Basic understanding of machining processes.
  • A brief description of the part and features needed.
  • Detailed drawings & CAD, with tolerances and features labeled.
  • Defined material.
  • Consult if needed.
  • Submit a job request form online.
