In Mechatronics Engineering, you graduate with more than a degree — you graduate with real industry experience.
By the time you graduate, you will have gained:
A competitive edge in the job market
Hands-on engineering work experience
Leadership and teamwork skills
Strong professional connections
This combination prepares you to step confidently into high-demand engineering careers.
Students must complete two mandatory work experience terms or the York U co-op program.
Choose your path
1. Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Path
The WIL Path follows national standards set by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada.
Your work experience must:
- Include a continuous supervisor
- Support professional development
- Provide real workplace learning
- Be paid (hourly wage, salary, stipend, honorarium, or course credit)
2. Co-op Path
You are more than grades.
If you are accepted into the Lassonde Co-op program and complete all requirements, your co-op work terms will automatically satisfy your Mechatronics WIL requirement.
Required Courses:
- COOP 2109 0.00 + COOP 2100 2.00
- COOP 3109 0.00 + COOP 3100 2.00
If you partially complete co-op, you may transfer your completed work term(s) to the WIL Path.
Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Path Requirements
Work Hours Requirements
You can complete WIL in one of two ways: either by completing two work terms, each requiring 420 or more hours, or by completing one extended work term totalling 840 or more hours. You may combine multiple part-time roles to reach 420 hours.
Voluntary placements are also accepted if they total 420+ hours and provide professional-level experience. Examples include:
- Engineers Without Borders Canada
- Habitat for Humanity Canada
- Ontario Society of Professional Engineers
In addition, you must complete the required courses: TECL 2910 (0.00) with COOP 2100 (2.00) and TECL 3910 (0.00) with COOP 3100 (2.00).
For TECL 2910 and TECL 3910, you must complete:
- Minimum 420 hours (about 12 weeks × 35 hours/week)
- Paid or credited work
- Supervised experience
- One 840+ hour job can count for both courses.
Suggested Timeline
Most students follow this schedule:
Summer after 2nd year → Complete TECL 2910 (420+ hours) + COOP 2100
Summer after 3rd year → Complete TECL 3910 (420+ hours) + COOP 3100
You must prepare through the Experience York portal in the semester before your planned work term. You may also complete WIL during the academic year. Speak with an academic advisor first to avoid delays in your course progression.
