Lassonde student brings engineering to Toronto schools


Lassonde student Farzia Khan is reaching out to the next generation of engineers. After working with Lassonde as a high school recruitment captain, Frazia wanted to go further in engaging younger students. She got involved in Project START, an initiative designed to spark enthusiasm for STEM subjects in elementary school children in Toronto’s public schools.

As the External Relations Director of WISE chapter at Lassonde, Farzia is also deeply interested in bringing gender balance to engineering. She sees her participation in Project START as a way of contributing to realizing Lassonde’s 50:50 challenge.

“I felt that in order to truly create gender balance in Engineering and get more students in STEM fields, it’s important to start early because by the time students reach high school, they have already made up their minds and perhaps don’t end up taking the necessary pre-requisites for getting into engineering,” said Farzia.

She has recently been involved with students at Driftwood Elementary School, teaching grade 5 children about structures and building strong bridges through hands-on activities. Farzia is currently organizing a group of Lassonde students to continue outreach into more schools in Toronto.
