From Varsity Hockey to Software Engineering: Balancing Academics and Athletics at Lassonde

At York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering, undergraduate students are more than just future engineers and computer scientists—they are well-rounded individuals who excel both inside and outside the classroom. From playing on varsity sports teams to mentoring peers and volunteering in their communities, Lassonde students embrace opportunities that build leadership, teamwork, and resilience alongside their academic pursuits.
Abbey McMillan, a fourth-year undergraduate student in Software Engineering, exemplifies this balance. As a student-athlete and an active community member, McMillan has made the most of her time at Lassonde by combining her love for technology with her passion for athletics and giving back.
“I chose to study at Lassonde so I could pursue my interest in Software Engineering, while playing on York University’s varsity hockey team,” says McMillan. “As a student-athlete, it’s important to find a balance between sport and study. Lassonde truly understands this and works with the athletics department to make sure students can achieve success without added pressure or stress. It’s great to be a part of a winning team and culture, while being able to focus on my studies.”
From a young age, McMillan was interested in computers, technology and solving problems. Lassonde has provided many opportunities for her to explore this passion and advance her knowledge and skills, including training machine learning models and designing and developing mobile applications.
Beyond academics, McMillan is also an active member of both the York and Lassonde communities. She serves as a mentor for York’s PAWS (Providing Athletes with Winning Strategies) program, where she helps junior athletes navigate the challenges of balancing academics and athletics. Additionally, as an executive member of the York Sport Council, she contributes to various community initiatives, from supporting local causes to volunteering at elementary schools and organizing fundraising events.
“Another reason I decided to study at Lassonde was for the co-op opportunities,” she explains. “These experiences have introduced me to the corporate world and helped me explore different career paths. I’ve been able to figure out exactly what I enjoy doing–it’s exciting to work in a place where I can see myself in the future. Currently, I’m working at a pharmaceutical company where I’m helping manage electronic databases and processes. For my next co-op placement, I hope to focus on coding and advancing those skills.”
One of McMillan’s proudest achievements is being named a Lassonde Scholar, a distinction that has connected her with like-minded individuals and allowed her to make meaningful contributions within the Lassonde and athletic communities. This recognition has inspired her to take on leadership roles and actively contribute to enhancing other students’ experiences.
As a Software Engineering student, varsity hockey player and community volunteer, Abbey McMillan has embraced the unique opportunities at Lassonde, balancing her academic passions with her athletic commitments. Like many Lassonde students, she credits Lassonde’s personalized learning environment, small class sizes, and strong sense of community for helping her excel in her journey.
“Though I’m not entirely sure what I want to do after graduation, I’m certain my experiences at Lassonde will be valuable in helping me establish a successful future,” she says.
