Engineering Block Model

An Alternative Option For Your First Year in Engineering

Shape your first-year experience. Choose how you learn.

Instead of juggling five courses at once, the block model timetable lets you focus on one integrated learning experience with up to two courses at a time.

You’ll build core engineering knowledge while applying it to real-world challenges throughout the year.

The fall term ends with a two-week design sprint, where you’ll learn the engineering design process while tackling a real-world challenge. In the winter term, you’ll complete a 12-week design project and present your work in a final showcase.

Students can select the block model timetable during the YU Start enrolment process. Space is limited to 250 students, and students can switch between models up until the first day of classes, depending on availability.

Prefer a more familiar approach? The traditional model timetable follows a standard university schedule, with five courses running at the same time across the semester. Classes, assignments and assessments run concurrently, with most midterms taking place in October and most final exams scheduled in December.

No matter which option you choose, you’ll learn the same foundational knowledge and be fully prepared to enter any of Lassonde’s engineering disciplines in second year.

Students who have transfer credit for first-year required engineering courses are not eligible for the block model timetable. If you have questions about your eligibility, please connect with an academic advisor.

Spots may fill rapidly. Therefore, students selecting the block model timetable should enrol via the YU Start instructions on the day of their enrolment. Students can always change their mind and enrol into the traditional model timetable prior to the start of classes in September, pending space availability.
