Lassonde Celebrates OSIRIS-REx Launch

On Thursday, September 8, the Lassonde School of Engineering hosted a celebration of the OSIRIS-REx asteroid mission launch.

Funded by the Canadian Space Agency, Lassonde’s Professor Mike Daly has been the lead researcher behind the OLA laser altimeter.

The high-powered laser will help to map asteroid Bennu as part of the mission’s goal of bringing a sample back to earth.

The spacecraft launched successfully at 7.05pm EST.

The NASA mission is scheduled to be completed in 2022.

Remarks at the event were given by York University leaders, Lassonde faculty members, Lassonde undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, and industry participants who discussed how working in space engineering research has enriched their academic journey and opened their perspectives to new paths.
