Bio
Dr. S. J. Pantazopoulou is a Professor at York University in the Lassonde School of Engineering. Her area of expertise is Structural Mechanics and Earthquake Engineering with particular emphasis in Performance-Based Engineering. Applications of her work are in Seismic Design, Assessment and Retrofit of Reinforced Concrete Structures using emerging materials and technologies. She is conducting research in the development of strain-resilient cementitious materials for corrosion-resistant durable retrofits but also as an opportunity for the development of novel structural designs that reduce the required amounts of confining and shear reinforcement with no compromise on ductility. In this direction she is exploring the use of nanomaterials in construction and the exploitation of industrial waste in concrete. To improve the understanding of the underlying relationship between mechanical properties and overall performance, she uses advanced numerical simulations at different scales of material response ranging from the microstructure to macroscopically observed behaviour of structural components.Dr. Pantazopoulou completed her Masters, Doctoral and Post Doctoral studies in Civil Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, and holds an Engineering Diploma in the same discipline from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Prior to her current appointment at the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University, Dr. Pantazopoulou gained international academic experience in several positions, which she held successively from 1988 onwards: tenured Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, Professor of Civil Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace, in Greece and Professor and Department Head of Civil Engineering at the University of Cyprus. Over her academic career, Professor Pantazopoulou has supervised several Doctoral Students, many of whom are now faculty members in Canada and abroad. She serves as a member in several International Committees of Experts that prepare technical guidelines for concrete and masonry structures and innovative construction materials. In the last five years she has been actively involved in the promotion of novel assessment procedures for structural assessment of the Built Cultural Heritage. In 2004, she was elected Fellow of the American Concrete Institute and is the recipient of ASCE’s Moisseiff Award for Notable Contributions to the Science and Art of Civil Engineering.
