No. We do not recommend that you “shadow” your desired program. Here are a few reasons why we discourage doing so:
1. Taking courses for a program you are not in will not guarantee admission into and/or graduation from that program in the future.
2. Some students “shadow” another program and later realize it is not their passion, and/or they apply and do not gain admission. To avoid this circumstance, invest your time, energy, and tuition in courses required by your current program.
3. Degree requirements can and do evolve over time. When a student is admitted to a new program, they must follow the degree requirements in place at the time of their admission to the new program, not older requirements. Students who “shadow” may be taking courses that correspond to older requirements instead of newer ones. Transfer credit will not apply in these circumstances if a student has accidentally or on purpose taken courses that are no longer relevant.
Rest assured, you can begin taking courses required for your desired major if/when you formally apply and are offered admission into your desired program.

***This material is currently under review. Connect with a Lassonde Academic Advisor if you have any questions or concerns about your top choice Engineering major / declaration form.***
Who uses this process?
All first-year engineering students who started in the Fall/Winter session. If you were offered a program guarantee, declaring your major is the final step. You can review the details here. Please, declare your engineering major even if you have not taken a lot of courses.
Fall/Winter Enrollment Block:
All BEng students have an automatic block on their account until they have been changed into a specified engineering major such as Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Software or Space Engineering. Major declarations will be effective for Fall/Winter 2024-2025.
The decision will be based on Fall/Winter grades. Students must be eligible to continue in the Engineering program. Students must be in good academic standing. You can review this information on the Academic Standards website.
If you think you will not be eligible to continue in Engineering at the end of the Fall/Winter session, but you plan to increase your overall GPA, petition, or submit a request to waive honours standing, be sure also to complete the declaration form so that your major can be changed if approved. Please connect with a Student Success & Academic Advisor for more information.
What is the submission deadline?
April 30. Late submissions will be reviewed, however, enrollment in Fall/Winter courses may be delayed.
When will my new major be effective?
Your new specified program will be effective the Fall/Winter 2024-2025 session.
When will I be notified of a decision?
Students will receive a decision via e-mail by June 30. Your enrolment window may open before you receive your declaration decision. This is normal. You will still be able to enrol when you receive your declaration decision.
During peak periods or if unforeseen circumstances arise, the process, including decisions, may be delayed.
Am I guaranteed my top choice of Engineering major?
If you received an Engineering program guarantee at the time of admission and are deemed eligible to continue in Engineering at the end of the Fall/Winter session and you submitted your declaration form by the due date, your Engineering program guarantee will be honoured for the major you selected at the time of admission. The Admissions team oversees engineering program lock-in deadlines and requirements. Review the deadlines and requirements here.
MUST READ:
If you received a program guarantee at the point of admission but have since changed your Engineering major preference, you will not be guaranteed your top choice.
Your first choice will not be guaranteed if you do not receive an engineering program guarantee when admitted.
Last year, 80% of students were given their top choice.
Computer, Electrical, and Software Engineering are particularly competitive. If you are interested in Computer, Electrical, or Software Engineering and do not have a program guarantee, you are encouraged to aim for an overall GPA of 7.00 or higher.

Application to Transfer to BEng
No.
We do not recommend that you “shadow” your desired program. Here are a few reasons why we discourage doing so:
1. Taking courses for a program you are not in will not guarantee admission into and/or graduation from that program in the future.
2. Some students “shadow” another program and later realize it is not their passion and/or they apply and do not gain admission. To avoid a circumstance such as this, invest your time, energy, and tuition in courses required by your current program.
3. Degree requirements can and do evolve over time. When a student is admitted to a new program, they must follow the degree requirements in place at the time of their admission to the new program, not older requirements. Students who “shadow” may be taking courses that correspond to older requirements as opposed to newer requirements. Transfer credit will not apply in these circumstances if a student has accidentally or on purpose taken courses that are no longer relevant.
Rest assured, you can begin taking courses required for your desired major if/when you formally apply and are offered admission into your desired program.
