Applying to a BSc or BA (Major or Minor)
What are the minimum academic requirements for Computer Science for Software Development (CSSD)?
• Minimum 24 credits completed at York University
• Minimum 5.0 (C+) overall GPA
• Completion of all the following prerequisites:
1. Science (SBI4U or SCH4U or SPH4U) and Advanced Functions MHF4U, with no prerequisite below 70%.
OR
2. At least 6.00 credits of SC/MATH (where the course code includes a second digit of 5) with an overall average of 7.0 (B+). All 2nd digit five “5” credits will be included in the average calculation;
OR
3. At least 6.00 credits of SC/MATH (where the course code does not include a second digit of 5) with an overall average of 5.00 (C+). All non-2nd digit 5 courses will be included in the average calculation.
Science and Math prerequisites must be completed within the last 5 years. Once SC/MATH courses have been completed, the SC/MATH prerequisite must be met. Students cannot mix and match math requirements.
Additional Information
Upon transfer into the CSSD program, students are expected to complete the full complement of required CSSD courses, regardless of having completed comparable coursework in previous programs. Prior courses from other academic programs may be used to fulfill elective requirements but are NOT expected to be considered for course substitution toward CSSD degree requirements.
Due to the sequential introduction of the CSSD program, which commenced in Fall 2024, the first cohort of students will be eligible to complete all graduation requirements no earlier than the 2027-2028 academic year.
Students should note that transferring into the program may result in credit requirements exceeding the standard 120-credit minimum for graduation. While this scenario is not anticipated for most students, prospective transfer applicants must acknowledge and accept this possibility prior to program enrollment.
How and when do I apply?
To apply to any of the above programs, submit your application between January 2 and May 15 at the Registrar’s Program Change website.
When will I get a decision?
The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department will review applications and make decisions throughout the summer, based on the strength of the applicant pool and their most recent Fall/Winter academic performance as reflected in the grade report. Summer courses in progress will not be considered. Once a decision is made, your Program Change Request status will be updated. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the EECS Department.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee approval of the transfer application.
Eligibility criteria will be reviewed annually, typically in September, for the upcoming academic year and may be adjusted based on demand and resource availability.
Course Relief applications are not accepted for transfers to CSSD. However, if you have been accepted into the program, we can process eligible Course Relief applications retroactively.

Who Needs to Declare?
First-year and undeclared Engineering students must declare an Engineering major by the Winter term. This includes students in:
Lassonde School of Engineering – Specialized Honours, Engineering (Keele)
Lassonde School of Engineering – Specialized Honours, First Year Engineering (Markham)
If your program title already reflects an Engineering major (e.g., Computer, Software, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Space Engineering), you do not need to declare.
Unsure of your program title? Log in to the Registration and Enrolment Module (REM) to check.
How to Declare
Submit your top-choice major through the personalized Engineering Major Preference and Declaration Form, which was provided to you at the time of admission and enrollment.
Important Requirement
To have your declaration considered, you must meet the Honours Progression Rules for Engineering by the end of the Winter term.
Am I Guaranteed My Top Choice?
Yes, if you received an Engineering Program Guarantee at the time of admission.
No, if you received the guarantee but later changed your top choice.
No, if you did not receive an Engineering Program Guarantee at the time of admission.
Typically, about 70% to 80% of students in good standing are admitted to their first-choice major.
When Will I Be Notified?
You will be notified before your Fall/Winter enrolment access time. Expect an email in late June or early July with your Engineering major, so you can plan your courses accordingly.
Deadline to Declare
All major declarations must be submitted by April 1.
Need Help?
If you can’t find your form or aren’t sure about your Engineering Program Guarantee, contact a Lassonde Academic Advisor.

How do I apply?
Application to Transfer to BEng
No.
We do not recommend that you “shadow” your desired program. Here are a few reasons why we discourage doing so:
1. Taking courses for a program you are not in will not guarantee admission into and/or graduation from that program in the future.
2. Some students “shadow” another program and later realize it is not their passion and/or they apply and do not gain admission. To avoid a circumstance such as this, invest your time, energy, and tuition in courses required by your current program.
3. Degree requirements can and do evolve over time. When a student is admitted to a new program, they must follow the degree requirements in place at the time of their admission to the new program, not older requirements. Students who “shadow” may be taking courses that correspond to older requirements as opposed to newer requirements. Transfer credit will not apply in these circumstances if a student has accidentally or on purpose taken courses that are no longer relevant.
Rest assured, you can begin taking courses required for your desired major if/when you formally apply and are offered admission into your desired program.
