This information is for current York students interested in applying to a Lassonde program for the upcoming Fall/Winter session. If you have additional questions after reviewing this website, please connect with an Academic Advisor.

Applying to a BSc or BA (Major or Minor)

***Due to the competitive nature of our programs and limited spaces, only a limited number of applicants will be granted admission. Decisions will be based on the strength of the applicant pool based on their most recent Fall/Winter academic decision as reflected on the grade report. Summer courses in progress will not be considered.***

What are the minimum academic requirements for Computer Science or Computer Security?

• Minimum 24 credits completed at York University
• Minimum 6.0 (B) overall GPA
• Completion of:
MHF4U and one other 4U math (MCV4U recommended) with an overall average of 75% (with no math grade below 65%);

OR

At least 6.00 credits of SC/MATH (where the course code includes a second digit of 5) with an overall average of 7.0 (B+). All 2nd digit five “5” credits will be included in the average calculation;

OR

At least 6.00 credits of SC/MATH (where the course code does not include a second digit of 5) with an overall average of 5.00 (C+). All non-2nd digit 5 courses will be included in the average calculation.

Math prerequisites must be completed within the last 5 years. Once SC/MATH courses have been completed, the SC/MATH pre-requisite must be met. Students cannot mix and match Math requirements. This information is also available in our Program Change Webinar.

If applying to a BSc program, completion of SCH4U or SPH4U or equivalent (e.g., SC/CHEM 1500, SC/PHYS 1510) with a B+ or higher is also required and must be successfully completed within the last 5 years.

If you have completed any LE/EECS course without a second digit of 5 in the past, an EECS GPA of 4.50 will also be required.

Review our Program Change Webinar, and an Academic Advisor will go through the process with you.

• SPH4U (or equivalent e.g. PHYS 1510)
• MHF4U (or equivalent e.g. MATH 1510)
• MCV4U (or equivalent e.g. MATH 1520)

And two additional 4U or M courses – recommendation(s): Chemistry is highly recommended for the Atmospheric Science and the Space Science streams, SCH4U (or equivalent e.g., CHEM 1500)

How do I apply?

To apply to any of the above programs, visit the Registrar’s Program Change website.
No. We do not recommend that you “shadow” your desired program. Here are a few reasons why we discourage doing so:

1. Taking courses for a program you are not in will not guarantee admission into and/or graduation from that program in the future.

2. Some students “shadow” another program and later realize it is not their passion, and/or they apply and do not gain admission. To avoid this circumstance, invest your time, energy, and tuition in courses required by your current program.

3. Degree requirements can and do evolve over time. When a student is admitted to a new program, they must follow the degree requirements in place at the time of their admission to the new program, not older requirements. Students who “shadow” may be taking courses that correspond to older requirements instead of newer ones. Transfer credit will not apply in these circumstances if a student has accidentally or on purpose taken courses that are no longer relevant.

Rest assured, you can begin taking courses required for your desired major if/when you formally apply and are offered admission into your desired program.
Review our Program Change Webinar. If you apply to any BA or BSc program in Lassonde, our webinar covers everything you need to know.

What can you do with your Engineering degree?

Check out the Career Education and Development website. Use their “What can I do with my degree?” tool to learn more about career options, skills developed, and professional organizations associated with various disciplines. Not every major is listed in the tool, but it is a great resource for exploring a variety of related disciplines.
Who uses this process?
All first-year engineering students who started in the Fall/Winter of 2023-2024 session. If you were offered a program guarantee, declaring your major is the final step. You can review the details here. Please, declare your engineering major even if you have not taken a lot of courses.

Declaration Deadline:
First-year engineering students who started in the Fall/Winter of 2023-2024 must declare a specified major by April 30th.

Fall/Winter Enrollment Block:
All BENG ENG students have an automatic block on their account until they have been changed into a specified engineering major, such as Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Software or Space Engineering.  Program change will be effective for Fall/Winter 2024.

The decision will be based on Fall/Winter grades. Students must be eligible to continue in the engineering program. Students must be in good academic standing. You can review this information on the Academic Standards website.
If you think you will not be eligible to continue in Engineering at the end of the Fall/Winter session, but you plan to increase your overall GPA, petition or submit a request to waive honours standing, be sure also to complete the declaration form so that your major can be changed if approved. Please speak to a Student Success & Academic Advisor for more information.

When and How do I apply?

Submit the Declaration of Engineering Major Form by April 30th.

When will my new major be effective?

Your new specified program will be effective Fall/Winter 2024-2025 session.

When will I be notified of a decision?

Students will receive a decision via e-mail by June 30. During peak periods or if unforeseen circumstances arise, the process, including decisions, may be delayed.

Program Guarantee

Am I guaranteed my top choice of engineering major?
If you received an Engineering program guarantee at the time of admission and are deemed eligible to continue in Engineering at the end of the Fall/Winter session and you submitted your declaration form by the due date, your Engineering program guarantee will be honoured for the major you selected at the time of admission. The Admissions team oversees engineering program lock-in deadlines and requirements. Review the deadlines and requirements here.

MUST READ:
If you received a program guarantee at the point of admission but have since changed your Engineering major preference, you will not be guaranteed your top choice.

Your first choice will not be guaranteed if you do not receive an engineering program guarantee when admitted.
Note – 80% of students were given their top choice last year.

Computer, Electrical, and Software Engineering are particularly competitive.
If you are interested in computer, electrical, or software engineering and do not have a program guarantee, you are encouraged to aim for an overall GPA of 7.00 or higher.

Transfer Credit
Students who study at other post-secondary institutions as well as students who study at York University in a non-engineering program may receive credit for their studies when they are admitted to an engineering program at York University.  Note that students do not need to be transferring from an accredited engineering program to be eligible for transfer credit.
For students who are transferring to an engineering program at York University, the following courses are not eligible for transfer credit:
– courses with the CIVL, ENG, and MECH rubrics,
– courses with the EECS and ESSE rubrics that are required for any of the engineering programs, and
– the course MATH 2930

Courses with the MATH, CHEM, and PHYS rubrics, as well as foundational science courses and complementary studies courses are eligible for transfer credit up to a maximum of 30 credits (common courses include MATH 1013, MATH 1014, MATH 1025, MATH/EECS 1019, MATH/EECS 1028, MATH 2015, MATH 2271, PHYS 1800, PHYS 1801 and the combination of CHEM 1000 and CHEM 1001).

Transfer within York University
A student transferring from another program at York into an engineering program is reviewed by Lassonde’s advising team via the Lassonde program change process.  Based on a list of courses approved by the Undergraduate Program Directors for engineering programs, containing courses with MATH, CHEM and PHYS rubrics, foundational science courses, and complementary studies courses, the advising team will look for equivalencies.
Program checklist:
In both external and internal transfers, Lassonde’s advising team puts together a tailored program checklist, including the transfer credits, for the student.  A student with additional questions after the enrolment appointment is seen one-on-one by an academic advisor.

Review the BENG Program Change Webinar, and an Academic Advisor will go through the process with you.
