Program Overview
What’s exciting about mechatronics engineering is the creativity, empathy and big-picture thinking it demands. In Lassonde’s new program, you’ll study engineering in mechanical, electrical, software, computer and space fields, along with computer science—blending these areas to design technologies that work seamlessly with people, making everyday life more sustainable, inclusive and connected.
Interdisciplinary Learning – Build broad engineering expertise by combining several disciplines to design innovative technologies that shape the future.
Hands-on Experience –Work in state-of-the-art labs and tackle real-world challenges in automation, AI, and robotics.
Industry Connections – Gain experience through mandatory work-integrated learning, including co-op placements with top companies.
Future-Proof Your Career – Mechatronics engineers are in high demand across all industries—from automotive, aerospace and robotics to healthcare, agriculture and renewable energy.
What Sets Mechatronics at Lassonde Apart?
Lassonde’s Mechatronics Engineering program is for students who want to go beyond the classroom and gain real-world experience, leadership skills and industry connections—all while completing their degree in just four years.

Lassonde is rethinking how engineering is taught. Through the first-year block model, students focus on one course at a time rather than juggling several at once. Early results show this new approach helps you:
- Boost academic success, with more students achieving top grades.
- Lower stress by eliminating overlapping deadlines and exams.
- Engage more fully in discussions, labs and hands-on projects.
- Find better balance, with more time for friends, clubs and other interests.

Technical skills alone aren’t enough—employers look for strong team players and leaders. That’s why this program requires 12 hours per year of external leadership or teamwork experience. You’ll have the flexibility to choose how to meet this requirement, whether it’s through:
- Playing a team sport or joining a club.
- Volunteering with a community organization.
- Participating in a band or choir.

Unlike traditional programs where students often stick to their year-level cohort, Mechatronics at Lassonde encourages cross-year collaboration. Through multi-year project teams and mentorship programs, you’ll:
- Work alongside upper-year students and learn from their experience.
- Develop leadership skills by mentoring students in earlier years.
- Collaborate across levels to solve real-world, interdisciplinary challenges.
- Build relationships that last beyond university, creating a strong professional network.

Through two mandatory work terms — plus optional co-op placements of 4, 8, 12 or 16 months — you’ll graduate with more than a degree. You’ll have:
- Paid, real-world experience that employers look for.
- Skills and confidence to step into high-demand roles right after graduation.
- Connections and networks that open doors to long-term career success.
Mechatronics Engineering at York’s Keele Campus prepares you for rewarding, well-paying work in industries that are growing fast: automotive, aerospace, robotics, healthcare, agriculture and renewable energy.
Hands-on learning & lab experiences

Control & Mechatronics Laboratory
Using the Quanser AERO, a dual-motor experiment platform, students gain hands-on experience with real-time control systems, essential for spacecraft attitude control, drone navigation, and robotic autonomy.

Vibration Testing Facility
Utilize state-of-the-art equipment capable of subjecting components and systems to vibration loads up to 1600 kg-force, simulating the rigorous conditions of spaceflight to ensure reliability and performance.

The Algonquin Radio Observatory
As part of their studies, 4th-year students use Canada’s largest fully steerable antenna to track GPS satellites, applying real-world techniques in satellite navigation and deep-space communication.

Satellite Communications
Work with a parabolic antenna to send and receive radio signals, gaining practical experience in space communication systems.

Flight Software Development
Program and test autonomous systems used in space missions.

Hardware Testing for Spaceflight
Gain experience with industry-standard test methods before components go into space.
“What sets Lassonde’s program apart is how we go beyond the classroom. Students build leadership and teamwork skills by taking part in activities like volunteering, clubs, and community projects—experiences that make them stronger collaborators and problem-solvers. They learn from and mentor each other through multi-year project teams, gaining confidence and perspective along the way. And with hands-on work experience built into the degree, plus strong partnerships with leading employers, our graduates will be ready to shape technology that truly connects with society.”
