2024 Lassonde Undergraduate Research competition now accepting applications

The Lassonde School of Engineering is gearing up to host summer research positions for undergraduate students, with funding from the Lassonde Undergraduate Research Awards (LURA) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA).

Student can apply by visiting the Lassonde website until Thursday, February 15, 2024.

For nine years, this program has provided students with opportunities to work on impactful research projects under the supervision of Lassonde faculty members, helping advance their technical and professional skills as well as academic and career journeys.

This year, more than 60 awards, valued at $10,000 each, will be granted to full-time, undergraduate students to support their research conducted over 16 weeks during the summer. The award competition is open to students from Lassonde, York University and other schools across the globe.

With dozens of diverse research projects to choose from, students are sure to find a topic that piques their interest – whether it be fabricating microfluidic devices for pollutant detection or analyzing structural material behaviour when exposed to fire.

Each project also addresses one or more of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), allowing students to contribute pragmatic solutions for pressing global challenges.

At the end of summer, Lassonde hosts a conference to celebrate the successes and research efforts of each student. This professional event allows students to showcase their work, network with researchers and receive recognition among peers.

Lassonde’s undergraduate research program serves as a strong foundation for student researchers, helping prepare them for future endeavours such as co-op placement, graduate school and industry positions. As a direct result of the program, students have published papers in notable journals and received prestigious awards, while others have been offered career opportunities.
